The Ninebot Max G3, one of the most popular choices among Brussels riders switching from shared scooters to a scooter of their own.
Shared e-scooters are due to leave Brussels on 1st January 2027. If you rely on them to get to work or class, now is the time to ask how you will get around instead. Here is what is changing, and why owning your own scooter, even paid in instalments, often works out cheaper than renting one ride at a time.
On 11 June 2026, the Brussels government decided to ban shared electric scooters across the Region from 1st January 2027, citing road safety and the nuisance they cause.
The summer that followed was eventful. On 29 July, the Council of State annulled the current operators' licences, and Brussels Mobility initially told them to remove their scooters by 1st September. At the end of August, a deal was finally reached: shared bikes stay under a transitional arrangement until 2028, and shared scooters can keep running until the end of the year. The ban on shared scooters from 1st January 2027, however, still stands.
In mid-October, Bolt and Dott were still hoping to change the Region's mind. But for now, 1st January 2027 remains the announced date. We will update this article if anything changes.
The 1st January 2027 ban only applies to shared scooters. Your own electric scooter remains legal everywhere it was before, with one exception: from 15 November 2026 and for one year, all scooters, shared and privately owned alike, will be banned in 19 zones of Brussels (including around Brussels-Midi station and Porte de Hal). Otherwise, the usual rules apply:
A shared scooter ride looks cheap: a few euros each time. But add those rides up over a month and the total gets heavy. Published prices in Brussels were around €1 to unlock the scooter, then €0.23 to €0.26 per minute.
Take a 15-minute commute, there and back, 20 days a month, at €1 plus €0.26 per minute:
Operators also offer passes and bundles that bring the bill down for regular riders, and prices change often: check what you actually spend in your app's ride history.
At Street Ride, you can spread the cost of a new electric scooter with a Santander instalment loan, over 12 to 84 months depending on the amount. Take the Ninebot Max G3 at €899, repaid over 24 months:
| Shared scooters | Ninebot Max G3 over 24 months | |
|---|---|---|
| Per month | €196 (40 rides of 15 min) | €45.22 (fixed monthly instalment) |
| Over 24 months | €4,704 | €1,085.28 |
| Electricity | included | a few euros a month |
| After 24 months | you own nothing | the scooter is yours |
| Availability | depends on scooters nearby, and none at all in 2027 | right outside your door, any time |
Warning, borrowing money also costs money.
Representative example: for an instalment loan of 899 EUR, the annual percentage rate of charge (APR) is 20.50 % (fixed annual borrowing rate: 18.79 %), repayable in 24 monthly instalments of 45.22 EUR, i.e. a total amount payable of 1,085.28 EUR.
Type of credit: instalment loan subject to approval of your credit application by Santander Consumer Finance (Open Bank, S.A., Belgian branch, Guldensporenpark 81, 9820 Merelbeke, company no. 0763.791.559). Credit intermediary (ancillary agent): Go Mobility SRL (Street Ride), Rue de Linthout 176, 1040 Etterbeek, company no. 0802.097.651.
At these prices, the monthly instalment is roughly the cost of ten 15-minute shared rides. As soon as you ride more often than that, owning your own scooter works out cheaper.
To compare with another model or a different term, our instalment payment simulator lets you pick your electric scooter or e-bike and see the monthly payment for each term.
To compare fairly, owning a scooter also takes a little organisation and a few extra costs:
If you only use a shared scooter a few times a month, sharing will stay cheaper until it disappears, and then you will need another option. The numbers really start to add up for people who ride every day or almost.
Instalment payment is available for new electric scooters and e-bikes, to adults living in Belgium.
Do you use shared scooters every day?
